A Basic Look at Poker Rules

Poker is a fun and exciting game. Still, there are a number of unique rules that should be appreciated by anyone looking to master this competition. What are some basic regulations to keep in mind?

Game Play

Betting normally takes place in a clockwise fashion. There are three choices that a player will have (1). One can “call” when he or she is able to bet the same amount that they put into the pot during their last hand. A “raise” occurs when one is able to place more into the pot than they did during a previous hand (this normally occurs if one believes that their cards are very strong). Finally, a “fold” signifies that the player drops out of the hand. While there will be no chance of winning, no more money needs to be placed into the pot.

Poker is defined by a number of different card combinations. Some common examples are:

  • A straight flush (five cards of the same suit that are ascending or descending in their order).
  • Four of a kind (four cards of the same value).
  • Full house (three of a kind and an additional pair; making five cards in total).

Appreciating how the game is played as well as some basic rules will help to ensure that anyone walks away a winner!
